Shimon Peres Has a Message to Spread, 'Be my Friend, Share Peace.'
At 88 years young, Peres is still showing that he's more forward thinking than the youngest of politicians.
Shimon Peres, the former two-time Israeli Prime Minister and current President of the Jewish state has embraced the digital age to help him spread his message, hoping that through Facebook, Twitter and other social mediums, he will be better able to connect to the younger generation, the same generation that, by being proactive and is behind the Arab uprisings and Occupy Wall Street, is truly making a difference.
While using social media to spread one’s message is not uncommon today, having an 88 year-old do so is remarkable. Then again, there is nothing common about Peres, the world’s oldest Head of State.
Peres, a Nobel Peace Laureate, founded the Peres Center for Peace in 1996, an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organization which aims to build peace through socio-economic cooperation and development in the Middle East region. Peres believes that economic diplomacy will lead to peace, and that in order to do so, we must show that peace pays more than war.
In order to share his newest initiative, Peres has started a Facebook page with the help of who else but its Founder, Mark Zuckerberg, where a global audience is free to ask him questions or make suggestions about how to promote peace in the Middle East.
“What is Mark Zuckerberg? A capitalist, a socialist? He didn’t have a party, he didn’t have an army, he didn’t have a country, he didn’t have a fortune, just an idea,” explained Peres.“Facebook opens eyes. Before it, people from the poorest countries didn’t have the slightest idea what’s happening in the rest of the world. So they thought they’re poor, the whole rest of the world is poor. All of a sudden they have Facebook and they begin to compare. What’s happening here, dictatorship, poverty, corruption, and it was a different world.”
If you need another reason to visit Peres’ page, then check out his promotional music video. “Be My Friend For Peace” composed by Noy Alooshe and Directed by Noam Vardi, shows that you can, indeed, teach an old dog new tricks, and that’s the essence of Peres, an elder statesman who is more forward thinking than the youngest of politicians.
And, besides, as Peres says, “the great thing in life is not free speech, but free expression.”
