Israel's World Renowned Water
Shafdan, Israel’s Dan Region Wastewater Treatment Plant, was just named by the United Nations as one of thirty exemplary projects worldwide that demonstrates the ability of local authorities to overcome environmental issues.
The technology, managed by Israel’s national water company Mekorot, filters wastewater naturally through sand to make it suitable for all forms of irrigation. It is used to irrigate more than 60 percent of agriculture in the Negev, contributing to Israel’s global record of reusing 80 percent of its wastewater.
This Israeli innovation was chosen by the United Nations Environmental Programme and ICLEI, an international association of local governments that have made a commitment to sustainable development.
