National Service has taken on a new meaning for the Jewish Agency for Israel.

A new JA program entitled “T.E.N. – Tikkun Olam” gives youth volunteers the chance to help Jewish and non-Jewish communities abroad on behalf of Israel. The first group of volunteers left recently for Ethiopia. Other volunteer groups will soon travel to India, Brazil, France, Thailand, and Ecuador. The groups, made up of about twenty volunteers, will spend three months in their destination running educational programs, assisting in hospitals, and otherwise helping disadvantaged communities.

Nir Lahav, director of the JA's Youth Activism Unit, explains, "Each one of us has an obligation to help the weak, and the more we do good for others, the better it will be for us. The project's volunteer bases will serve as a platform for fostering leadership and social responsibility among young people from the Jewish world and from Israel, and creating strong ties between them."
